As long a life as long life milk? Or perhaps one as long as the half life of a colour TV? Even perhaps that of… Oh forget i. A human being can live for around 125 years, or at least that is the current record give or take. The problem is for how long is a life worth living, after an age your faculties decline, you can no longer do half the things you used to. You need other people to help you do your daily routine and you probably sleep a lot more. Is the wisdom of your very long life of use to the rest of the world, or do you simply become a burden? Tired, old, grey haired and perhaps a little deaf and that is before inconveniences such as Rheumatism and forgetfulness come into play. In our family we currently have two nonagenarians and have had several others ( All gone now) who also saw themselves into their nineties. A couple back in their day did the ton and more. Longevity seems to run in the family, that is where other things, such as illness and war have not got in the way first.
What is my own mind on living to advanced old age? Well I am already a little deaf, a little forgetfull too and some things seem a little stiff in the morning and other things don’t work as well as they used to. As mush as I hate to think of it or ask of it, I think I could probably do with he help of a third party from time to time as well. Should I count that other scourge of old age, that of pooing my pants from time to time? Or is it all just practice in advance of what is to come? If I live to be a hundred, it would be nice to think I have my wits about me, can get around under my own steam and am not too much of a burden upon anyone. I do not like being fussed over on a good day and the idea of someone else doing my ablutions: Washing, shaving and that just does not fit with me. I would be an awful patient and not very patient either, if you excuse the pun.
Many people live to advanced old age, cause they love what they do tyhey have a sense of purpose and and enjoy every minute of it. They work right up until the minute they keel over, or retire when most people are already dead. Look at Rupert Murdoch, he is ancient, retired now but still going. What is his elixir of life? Or is it simply having a wife a good few years younger than he is? Keeping a sound mind is like having a sound body. You look after it, keep it working feed it the right foods and exercise it every day doing what you love to do. Be that creating works of art, making money or whatever. No man ever thrived in an environment he loathed, nor did nay woman. In fact that is what is guaranteed to kill you off all the quicker. Happiness is a vital ingredient to a long and happy life, as is probably good food, plenty of exercise and lots of sunshine.
When we hear of a particularly ancient ancient and their suggestions for what keeps them alive, they all have their own ideas. None of them say being a miserable, grumpy and unpleasant. Some of them say a glass of wine and a cigarette or two. Others claim it is a belief in God and others… Go and listen to them. Each one of us has the potentuial to live to one hundred years old, others can be immortal. Mozart has been dead for nigh on three hundred years, yet he lives on through his music. If you want to live forever or for what seems forever do great things, leave a tangible and wonderful record of your achievements and if you fail in that, then at least life a life worth living. One you enjoy and benefits yourself and other people. Either that or be a tree and live for five hundred years and more and be the hme to a thousand different animals and provide shade and shelter the year around.
Happy New Year to you all.
